Demand that York University Officials take action to reduce crime on campus

Week after week, students fall victim to crimes such as sexual assault, robberies, assault causing injuries and theft, in just the last week alone, 4 crimes were committed. We urge you to stop this violence by taking important steps to protect the safety of university students and visitors. As the leader of our University, we are very disappointed that your efforts to improve safety on campus have been ineffective and violent crimes are on an increase. Any improvements in the past have been short lived. Our campus used to be dangerous only at night, but we are now experiencing crimes during the day. We are tired of emails asking us to be vigilant and we have had enough "discussions" about the worsening situation. We believe that the presence of security officers is inadequate to cover such a large campus and that unarmed guards cannot act as an effective deterrent to armed criminals. The addition of police officers should be a permanent rather than a temporary solution. We demand that you take the following steps to protect individuals and property at York University:

1) Concrete 6 month, 1 year, 2 year and 3 year plans monitored by the Community Safety Council

2) To replace private security with Toronto Police Officers, paid for by re-allocating security budget

3) A satellite Police Station on campus, by re-allocating budget that is currently spent on private security, which is obviously not working as a deterrent to crime

Sexual assault, 2 armed robberies, 1 assault causing injury, all in 7 days.

Imagine someone studying in the basement of one of the school buildings late into the night until 4am during exam time alone without seeing a security guard for hours. One cannot help but wonder: If someone came and shot me for a cell phone and I ended up helpless and bleeding out on the ground, how long would it take for anyone to notice?

Whether you are a student, parent, faculty member, administrator, or someone who cares about York University, this matters because it is about your safety and the safety of your friends and the people you love. We need your involvement to change our community. Please sign the petition to be a part of this movement to make York University safer for you and your fellow community members.

Here is a snippet of major crimes reported in recent years:

Sept 2007 - 2 men enter dormitory, rapes 2 women aged 17 and 18 (Cnews.canoe.ca)

May 2009 - Security Guard was shot outside The Underground pub at York (Toronto Star)

April 2010 - Student sexually assaulted walking back to her apartment off campus resulting in very serious injuries (CP24)

April 2011 - International student murdered at York University Village (CBC)

Nov 19 2012, 10AM, Student robbed with a knife in academic building (York U Security Bulletin)

Nov 29 2012, 12:30 PM, Student sexually assaulted at Stong College basement (York U Security Bulletin)

These are only the major crimes that I can find reported on news sources, references to crimes that occurred at earlier dates are not easily available. Plus, statistics show that some crimes from theft to sexual assaults go unreported.

Ok, peps, just think about your own kids would you want them to be safe, I know you would these kids need your help by signing the petition. This is a problem that is happening throughout the world on campuses but we need to start taking back our safety from these criminals at large, that the system just slaps their hands and they are out to do this again.

that hipocrite Bloombritches is he the mayor for you guys also ?I don't know what part of NY you are in but you definatly need security and if you don't get apply for a gun .You guys need to be safe.So much violence it scares me I have a grandson in college in Indiana University 2nd year .I worry all the time about him. I will pray for help for all of you guys'.Life use to be so simple but those days are long gone. When mental ill people go on a shooting rampage I cannot blame the gun I blame the source that gave a lunitic a gun' Take care

It is so sad that our kids really struggle to get the education that they need, and it is really sad that women are the pry today in our society. And what is really disgust me is that our government and state official wants to just sweep it under the rug.Its time that our state needs to understand that it is time to wake up and do something about.

What you say would only apply if taxes were extremely low. That is not the case in Canada. The level of social services you receive is a function of how much taxes you pay, and in Canada, tax is a significant portion of your income forgone. A police 1st year cadet in training makes 45K a year, I graduate with a business degree in June and my expected income is 30K, if they make more than me, I expect a return on my investment. We have well compensated officers but not enough of them. When you look at how much taxes Canadians pay from the average 24% income tax in addition the regressive 13% consumption tax where 2/3rds of Canadians live paycheck to paycheck, meaning 2/3rds of Canadians give roughly 34% or more of their income to the government, you realize that asking for a safe campus is not an unreasonable demand.

self defense courses should be made available to everyone on campuses. in fact I would like to see it become a compulsory program. of course that will not happen.... too bad it has to come to this though. I would like to see a KRAV MAGA self defense course for women especially begun and at no charge. I am a long time practitioner and it is a VERY effective process.
it's not the be all however it will give one an advantage and a chance to avoid injury, believe me.

Kevin Cheung

It should. But most martial arts instructors will tell you, the best way to win a fight is to avoid one, another words, run (if you can). But otherwise it's better to hand over your phone than get into a fight against an armed person with nothing but your fist. For girls though the issue is more complicated as they may be more easily overpowered.

I am a York U. graduate, and I remember only too well the fear that I experienced when on campus. I lived in on-campus h housing for 2 years, and in that time I heard the screams in three separate assaults. I called police in each case. The first was a domestic assault, the 2nd was a mugging by a stranger, and we don't know the details of the 3rd attack as no victim ever came forward. I had to move off campus because I was always listening for another assault.

Kevin Cheung

It actually surprised me that I did not find any type of activism towards this end. That's why I started this. Yes there were marches and town hall meetings but those get forgotten quite quickly. Lets home this one lasts!
