Dear Judge..
we the undersigned want to make a desperate plea to you, so that you will release Chum and Champ back home to their family for good.
Chum and Champ, owned by Black Creek couple the late -Edith, and Jacques Manseau, were held at the Comox Valley SPCA following seizure spurred from a Jan 5th 2012 complaint of a vicious dog attack against a neighbouring Jack Russell Terrier.
*PLEASE NOTE- the JackRussellTerrier was only ever found to be injured, and there was NEVER any proof that those injuries had been caused by Chum or Champ! The JRT is alive and well today*
The two dogs are currently in the temporary care of their family, but have to be surrendered again on Dec 5th to the Comox Valley SPCA to await your decision on whether they are to be killed.
This is not a case of dangerous dogs; these dogs pose no risk to the public, but instead a dispute between neighbors that could be solved with a proper fence and training.
Please let them live..
Sincerely..

After more than 9 months of advocating for the release of her 2 beloved dogs Chum and Champ–Edith got her wish. They were given parole with limitations until their verdict of being deemed dangerous dogs–or not was to be read on Dec 6, 2012. This was such a relief and Edith was overjoyed. Happiness and relief that her two gentle giants were coming home.
Edith and Jacques fought the CVRD every step of the way as the CVRD and the neighbours tried to have these two dogs put down. Neighbours ganged up and spoke of death wishes for the dogs publically and in court–and yet Edith didn't give up. She held her head high and trusted that her dogs would be found innocent.
Edith had not seen her dogs since January 2012 and yet everyday was spent yearning–begging for their return–Edith lived long enough to get her babies temporary reprieve from their solitary confinement at the SPCA (who housed these dogs for the nine months) they had been locked up in different cells denied contact with their owners and each other.
Tragically Edith was hospitalized prior to their homecoming–The fight she fought so hard for, the tears she cried, the nights she cried out–please let this stop were not enough and Edith could not hang on any longer. The stress was too much, the agony of loss a cross to heavy to bear. The heart of a mother broken by frustration, pain, loss and agony a heart that stopped beating and thus leaving us to finish her mission and bring these dogs home for good.
Edith died with her husband Jacques by her side–knowing that she had done what she could and trusting Jacques and his supporters to finish her mission...so let's make this happen!

This video is dedicated to a true warrior - EDITH MANSEAU whose dogs were taken from her on January 26th 2012. They were seized under the dangerous dogs legislation, and deemed vicious. Edith fought long and hard for 9 months for her babies' freedom. Sadly, Edith's fight ended when she passed over on October 29th, 2012. Those of us left will continue to fight for Chum and Champ until they are free for good! These dogs are nothing but loving, gentle and loyal. Rest in peace dear Edith.

Many thanks for taking action - JCv AAA

Very, very sad that there was no fencing good enough to prevent this, and because of these owners irresponsibility these dogs might die. Is it sad and heartbreaking, yes. But they KILLED another dog. What if that was your dog? I say this AS a longtime Newfoundland dog owner who currently has 3 newfs and runs a small all breed dog rescue. I would NEVER let my Newfoundlands share a dodgy fence line with a Jack Russell. They would be somewhere safe UNTIL I HAD A PROPER FENCE. End of story. This would not have happened if the owners had been responsible. These dogs should be sent to a Canadian Newfoundland Dog Breed Rescue, there are many all over Canada. I just feel that the irresponsibility by the owners of these beautiful dogs proves they cannot handle them. Do accidents happen? Yes. But killing another dog is no accident and the owners should be held accountable, but it also does not mean these dogs should die too.

** CHUM AND CHAMP...DID NOT KILL..I REPEAT DID NOT KILL...the JR is alive and well! **

First off, I do NOT feel these dogs should be held responsible for the actions of ALL the humans involved, on both sides. They should not die because parties on both sides refuse to truly be honest about what happened. I have ofc signed the petition and taken all the action I can to save their lives, even though I feel they should be sent to a Newf breed rescue.

I am sorry if I got the facts wrong about the death of the Jack Russell, if you are right, it was reported to me erroneously, but he was attacked by "something". Does anyone of pictures of this JRT's original injuries and of him currently?

I have been passed a LOT of information about this and what is quietly being done behind the scenes which has not yet been made public, that I cannot divulge about this situation. Once it is made public I am confident it will go to show that it comes down to the onus is squarely on the irresponsible owners. That doesn't make them bad people, but it doesn't change anything despite the fact that the JRT did not die. Plus, why would this be, according to this petition and take action page, JUST about fence issues and training IF the attack on the JRT did not happen and if it did it had nothing do to with Chum and Champ, and it is merely a vendetta. Did they have proper fencing before this happened? Did they start obedience training soon as they bought these dogs, and if so what level did they achieve?

The injuries on the Jack Russell that were stated, according to you, Angela, were that the vet "said the injuries are more typical of an industrial accident, with lesions most commonly seen in horses". This I take great issue with, the JRT was not involved in an industrial accident and he is NOT a horse, so the injuries are not comparable. That they are being made out as such is beyond ludicrous.

Newfs have extremely soft mouths and may not have caused puncture wounds with their canines, but this does not at all mean that no altercation between the two Newfs and the JRT happened. In my extensive experience with my past of showing, breeding and training Newfs in obedience, water rescue and draft trials, to have evolved in my later years to rescue, I still involve training, socialization and exposure to many different situations and dogs in order to set them up for success when I find them their forever home. Even though I do feel Newfoundlands are an extremely safe dog and have only seen one bred by an irresponsible breeder show aggression towards humans.

I am really surprised that so many of you who seem to have all the answers will NOT answer the MOST important question, this is as to the fence issue, and how can any animal lover feel that a non secure fence and insufficient training for these two lovely dogs is in any way OK? This definitely was THE factor in them being seized. Is that not the #1 and #2 most important things in regards to their shelter and well being when they are living in a suburban area? If they had proper fencing and training them these allegations could NOT have even been made despite the supposed neighbors in the area who are being portrayed as "out for blood", vindictive and wanting these dogs dead. On that, I do not know, but I have not been privy to any statements of such, and I would appreciate anyone who can prove by providing any links to any stories done by the local Comox media on this case so I can form a rational and fair opinion.

Are we not responsible to provide a safe environment for our dogs, to not only keep them from danger from what is outside the fence, but to also keep other animals out of our yards to keep them from danger as well. Newfs are lovely, amazing, life saving dogs. That being said, they are not for everyone, and especially if not trained and with no proper fence. They are very strong dogs, and despite their wonderful natural disposition, if not trained well by 6 months of age, they can be quite a handful to control, despite their natural instincts.

So Angela, you feel that Chum and Champ's owners are not only blameless in all this, but are also the target of a conspiracy involving their neighbors, the authorities and vets as well as have been wrongly accused of this attack. Can you prove this showing statements from the neighbors to back this up? I am not saying it didn't happen, I just have seen zero proof, only accusations, opinions and second and third hand information.

I know Newfs well. I am not saying I know everything and more than anyon else, by any means, but I have over 20 years experience with the Newfoundland breed and have worked studyng them in all aspects of behavior, conformation, genetics and the health issues specific to the breed in their genes, as well as their instinctual drives, pedigrees, their dietary requirements ( I ONLY feed a raw diet to ALL the dogs I have rescued and rehomed ) as well as training Newfs for water rescue and draft trials - for those who do not know what draft trials are, it is training Newfs to pull carts, weight and be under full control of the handler, draft and water tr other things to showcase their amazing natural instincts being harnessed to earn titles.

They could have been attacked first by the JRT, NONE of us know what REALLY happened, except Chum, Champ and the JRT and they aren't "talking". The facts are that the fencing did not protect the JRT from the Newfs, and vice versa. How about a tiny bit of personal responsibility from the owners instead of pointing fingers everywhere but to themselves, and down playing this as a mere "fence and training" issue. The only living creatures that are truly blameless in this all are the actual dogs, but not the owners by any means. Also, if these neighbors are irrantionally against these dogs, why would the owners even want these dogs to be subject to this supposed lynch mob? Would it not be in the best interest of the dogs to find a much safer environment? They will NOT die like was suggested on this thread if they are rehomed, any one in rescue can attest at how well dogs can adjust given the chance.

So, if those who purport to have these all these "facts" about this vendetta can even answer about the fence and training rationally, I would appreciate it. If no one can, sadly that silence speaks volumes to me and many other newf lovers that have been following this issue for months now.

I am not close minded, but I feel since I have no allegiance to either side and advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves and can see these dogs are being scapegoated due to the documented mistakes in judgement made by the owners, I would appreciate as many proven facts as possible for anyone wanting to continue replying to my comments.

Ok, wait up guys. Was the Jack Russell killed? Maybe those people loved their dog too. And of course you're right - proper fencing would have solved the problem, and killing two dogs and one person doesn't bring back their dog. But it's entirely possible that the gentle giants tore it to shreds before their very eyes - not an easy thing to forget. A little talking here might help before we burn the village or the monster.

PLEASE PEOPLE...GET THE FACTS RIGHT!!..CHUM AND CHAMP...DID NOT..DID NOT KILL!!! THE JACK RUSSELL WAS ONLY INJURED...AND THERE WAS..NO...NO..PROOF THAT THE TWO NEWFIES HARMED IT!! CHUM AND CHAMP...DID NOT KILL..AND HAVE NEVER SHOWN AGRESSION!

Thank you so much for setting us straight on this Angela and Jayne. I didn't know where to look for the straight scoop!

well I've signed it on trust. What have the neighbours got against these dogs. I'm guessing the yhaven't eaten anybody or this would not have gone on so long. I'd click the appeal on to my tiwtter page if I knew how maybe this will do it.

To Jo Thomas - the originator of complaint against Chum and Champ.

Should you be an elderly lady persecuted for the past 6 years by a vicious vengeful neighbour, and had your neighbour bear false witness against your dogs, and had your neighbour seek the death of your innocent dogs, and had that neighbour solicited others to join in the hostility, then this petition would be to support you.

However, YOU are the person who started all this 6 years ago with your personal war against Edith and Jacques Manseau; you are the person who has caused immense suffering (due to their confinement) to these gentle creatures; you are the person who wants to see the destruction of these loved family dogs; you are the person who was forced to admit making false noise complaints about the dogs previously; you who has acted with duplicity and malice aforethought... I could go on...

Therefore, this petition with over 32,000 signatures is a resounding worldwide condemnation of you. Can you hear it? Can you feel it? This is not a platform for you to rebut people's comments after they have formed their opinion, and neither is Facebook, so please refrain from commenting here. You took your malicious assault on Edith public when you accused her dogs for something you did not even witness, and the public are speaking here now. You show very poor taste and judgement commenting in this petition, and worse still, making more spurious statements against Chum and Champ in replies to people's posts. Please also desist contacting Chum and Champ advocates/supporters on Facebook, touting your slurs and libellous 'fantasies' that the dogs have committed subsequent crimes. Do you realise a person can be prosecuted for libel and slander.... When will you just stop!

Edith can no longer fight your tyranny because she is now dead. The poor woman was worn down by your bullying, which quite possibly hastened her demise. I for one, and only personally speaking, hold you accountable for that. Edith is mourned the world over and remembered with love and sympathy. We all empathise with what she had to endure at your hands for all these past long suffering years.

You on the other hand are infamous. Tens of thousands of people from all over this planet know who you are and not one supports you (excepting your complicit cronies), because when a sane rational person reads the specifics of this story, which goes so much deeper and is even more sinister with every twist and turn, they see how hatefully you have behaved.

Do you not think that anyone else in this world has a brain and the ability to think things thru for themselves? One theory I have is that it's quite plausible that a predatory bird could have snatched and hurt Spanner. This would explain why the injuries he had were NOT consistent with a dog attack (per examining vet's statement). Without witnesses to the incident, or any other (fictitious) incident, how can you possibly say Chum and/or Champ did anything at all? Both bogs have endured months incarcerated in the harsh stressful conditions of the local SPCA, months without any attempt to injure man or beast there. Their court accredited behaviourists sure as heck don't think either of these dogs have the temperament to do anything remotely what you falsely accuse them of. I'm more likely to believe their respected professional judgement than yours, any day.

Time to find a rock to slither back under Jo.

This appears to be a problem between neighbors. Surely it can be resolved without euthanizing these two wonderful dogs.

So, once again, it is due to humans and not the dogs them selves. Kill the humans and let the dogs live.
