China's one-child family planning policy restricts most families to having only one child each. Due to an existing cultural preference for boys, some parents will go to extremes to make sure they have a son. Some end up abandoning their newborn daughters, while others practice sex selective abortion in hope of a son. If they try to keep their daughters, in violation of the one-child policy, the Chinese authorities strap them with huge fines and subject women to forced abortion, forced sterilization, and other harsh punishments. As a result, there are now an estimated 37 million more men than women in China.

These aren't consequences of the one-child policy. These are consequences of the gendercide that is a consequence of the policy. So that would be my answer. If parents weren't bombarded with this ridiculous pressure to have a boy then they'd be happier about having a little girl, like those of us in other parts of the world.
Spot-on, Kyle. It's the sexist 'culture' that's at the root of it, not the one-child policy. (When will humans stop confusing 'cruelty' and 'culture'?) True, the heartless way the Chinese enforce it through forced abortions even in the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy is disgusting and a violation of human rights, but the phrasing of the question is a misdirection nonetheless.

I agree! and Women have been duped into thinking they are equal to men. I am not talking about equal pay or things like that. But only a woman can give birth to another human. This is nothing more than a symptom of a sick society that is headed to its own demise.

It does not matter to me which land, if China, India, USA, or where, no one has the right, to determine and say who can live and who will not be born and who will be born, who will die. There are other means to regulate population growth, only harm to any one. Birth control in this art should be stopped and banned from this planet.
Over population is a myth! Started by one of the pro death doctors I wish I could remember his name! Any way the problem is the rich control food production and logistics. It is all about money. Get rid of the small farmer in the US for the corporate farm. It is so easy to kill the ones who are least able to take care of themselves. That is why I will be a voice for these babies!
