Clean Up Your Mess in the Amazon After 7 Oil Spills in 4 years!

A recent environmental impact study by renowned economist, Juan Aste Daffós, estimates that the damages your company owes to the indigenous people of Canaan de Cachiyacu for environmental and health abuses due to oil contamination total more than $13 million! We hereby demand that you give the people of Canaan de Cachiayacu the compensation they deserve and commit to cleaning up your mess!

Since 1994, when your company took control of oil lot 31 B, home to the indigenous community of Canaán de Cachiyacu in the Peruvian Amazon, you have caused a series of oil spills - 7 in the last 4 years alone! - from your careless use of old, rusted pipelines. These spills have polluted the water, land, and vegetation of the area, as well as increasing instances of cancer, deaths, and other illnesses untreatable by local doctors. Worst of all, after oil spills occur, community members claim that your company has directed local men to wade in crude oil up to their chests (with absolutely no safety equipment) and clean YOUR mess with rags and their bare hands.

The indigenous people of Canaan have fought back against your neglect and abuse by halting production at 9 of your oil wells since September 2nd. Their movement is now gaining attention globally.

We, the international community, are appalled at the environmental degradation and human rights abuses that you and your company have caused. It is time that you take responsibility for your actions, compensate the people of Canaan for the harm you have caused, and ensure that your operations do no more harm in the future.

In the Amazon of Peru, the courageous Shipibo people of Canaan de Cachiyacu are gaining international attention for their David and Goliath battle against shadowy oil company Maple Energy. Since September 2nd, community members, in defense of their rights, their land and their peoples' health and wellbeing, have taken control of 9 oil wells belonging to the company and completely halted oil production, until their demands for clean water, health care and justice are met after suffering from nearly 40 years of oil pollution. Together we can make a difference to help this community – please sign their petition now, and let oil companies know that we are watching them!

Canaan de Cachiyacu is an indigenous community located in the Loreto region of the Peruvian Amazon, near the city of Contamana. Before the presence of oil companies, the people of Canaan lived in a pristine environment in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest, with clean drinking water from their fresh water streams, a plentitude of fish from their rivers, fertile soil for planting, and an array of different jungle animals to hunt.

However, since taking over the oil lot in 1994, Maple Energy has caused a series of oil spills (more than seven in the last 4 years alone!) from using old, rusted pipelines in the indigenous territory of Canaan, destroying the water, land, health and vegetation of the area.

The community now has to travel up to 3 hours to find non-contaminated sources of fish, and can no longer hunt or grow food on their own, now-contaminated land. The company hasn´t even given the community clean drinking water after all of these oil spills, and they are forced to drink out of the oil-contaminated river. As a result, there has been a huge increase in cancer and deaths from ¨unknown illnesses¨ in the village that local doctors cannot treat or diagnose. Ironically, workers from the oil company bring their own water when in Canaan. Why is that?

A recent environmental impact study by renowned economist, Juan Aste Daffós, estimates the damages owed to Canaan by Maple Energy for environmental and health atrocities total over $13 million. But Maple Energy denies that they are even causing environmental damage, let alone harm to the community!

Many oil companies like Maple operating in the Amazon have a long history of exploiting indigenous peoples and their lands, using antiquated technologies, rusted, old pipelines, and making promises of schools for their children, jobs, and money. Instead, they leave social and environmental destruction in their wake, believing that no one is paying attention. Not anymore!

We, the international community, are organizing a global campaign and petition to raise awareness about what companies like Maple Energy are up to. We will also be sending copies of this petition, as well as the Environmental Impact Study documenting the destruction, to the company's shareholders (Henderson Global Investors, Interline Enterprise SLU, International Finance Corporation, iShares MSCI All Peru Capped Index Fund, and AFP Integra, Horizonte and Profuturo) and the international press, including the Financial Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, LA Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, and Investors Chronicle to show them what corporate responsibility does NOT look like.
Let's let Maple Energy and oil companies like them know that someone IS paying attention! They have millions of dollars and many well-paid lawyers on their side, and the people of Canaan do not stand a chance without your support!

Please, together we can send a clear message that basic human rights come before corporate greed! Sign this petition today!

it more difficult to find them??), please email

    Dear Friends,

    Dear Friends,

Today, I met with the vice president of the regional indigenous federation to talk about the progress in Canaan. He had just returned from the community.  The people of Canaan have continued to halt their protests while the government has been collecting blood and water samples, as well as doing environmental inventories.

The government, community and the company Maple are still debating the terms of reference for the third, government-contracted study. One of the major issues in the debate is the size of the area for the study. The company only wants to use the area directly around the oil wells. However, the community wants to include a much larger area, as their community is located downriver from the oil wells, and their lakes, food sources and land are all being contaminated from these upriver wells.

Further, the chief of Canaan has just resigned. He is also a teacher at the community school, and his dealings with the company and Congress were seriously debilitating student learning. The community has now elected a new leader to represent them in these matters.

They all thank you for your support, and we will continue to provide updates as they become available to us.

Please continue to share this petition with your contacts, and please friend us on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/AlianzaArkana for daily updates on environmental justice and human rights issues in the Amazon.

The people of Canaan have now submitted their environmental impact study to the Peruvian congress, that states that environmental and health damages surpass $13 million USD. However, Maple Energy has also submitted its environmental impact study, which states that they are doing NO permanent damage. Congress has now decided to contract a THIRD study to evaluate damages. But as more time goes by, the health of the people and the forest are increasingly at risk.

We must put international pressure on Maple, and the only way to do that is through mass support. Please share this petition with your networks.

    In solidarity,
    Amanda Garratt

It's amazing how money and profits trumps peoples' basic rights and health, and if no one cares then they do nothing and get away with true abuse to innocent people who do not share the profits with at all, but basically piss all over them. Regulations should be put in place to control these greedy and selfish profit mongers. Would they do this to there own family? Of course not! Hypocrites!

yes this is such a shame!

stop using petroleum oil....this is all done in the name of 'demand' for our gas and oil needs. It's not necessary. Get a diesel vehicle and drive on biodiesel or filtered waste vegetable oil or get an electric car ride a bike, mass transit etc... Use your awareness and conscience to create a new healthier demand....this is how capitalism works. This cultural and environmental abuse has been going on for decades.....and our comfort and convenience are huge part of the cause.

True, you can also do things to eliminate your dependence on things like trips to grocery stores or (which weren't even an American institution until 1946 anyway), loans and mortgages, or electric companies. For example: I'm saving up money to buy little piece of land I can have a well dug in. I'm also going to plant a food forest instead of a lawn. Then my house will be a 8x40 shipping container. The only things it will need electricity for are a washer machine, a fridge, and a couple of plug-ins - I'm pretty sure I could supply that electricity with a home-made turbine and some solar panels. And face it, if we got used to biking or using something like parkour to get around our local areas we'd end up spending less money on doctor bills and our cars would last longer anyway (for those of us who don't have the option of going out and buying a literally new tech-y car at the moment ^^; ). Little things like this take money away from the over all system; then it has to change more to our liking just in order feed itself.

I like it when people respond with a solution as opposed to how devestating the problem is and what needs to be done. I on the other hand believe "We are the change we wish to see" Ghandhi, As for what i see and am working on is, building a community garden with traditional foods and medicines to feed and help my people and working on building underground homes (pithouses our people have built for the past 10,000 years) and will be working on creating a Cooperatve for people who believe in sharing and saving money to help others. I commend you Abigail on your efforts to change your ways, i to believe it starts with us as people and the efforts we make ourselves instead of just identifying the problems. In my language i say Way7 snuckshelq (I aknowledge you, all my relations) Senk'lip

¿Que naturaleza le vamos a dejar a nuestros nietos?

I hope a rep for the oil companies checks this out (YOU GUYS R SOME DIRTY GREEDY MOTHERF####R. It don't take all of that. All of these decades and in some cases centuries of taking from people, damn- chill before people physically strike back. Drop the world on them..................
