With the pain of the recent genocide still fresh in the historic memory of indigenous communities, it is extremely concerning that acts of state violence are once again taking place in Guatemala against indigenous people who seek to exercise their legitimate rights to free speech and peaceful protest.

Update #4
Posted by Kathryn Johnson (Campaign Leader) on Jan 9Thanks to all of your help, we gathered (between here and Salsa labs) over 10,000 signatures on this petition. We delivered the petition to the Interior Minister and President Otto Perez Molina in December, and will present a copy to the new leaders of the 48 Cantones of Totonicapan later this month.
GHRC staff report that when they delivered the 80 plus pages of petition signatures, it made quite an impact on the government's representative receiving it.
Way to help us let them know that...

Update #3
Posted by Kathryn Johnson (Campaign Leader) on Oct 22, 2012Guatemala's dangerous use of soldiers for police duties is getting a lot of attention in US and international news.

and Al Jazeera http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2012/10/2012101173514632802.html
Help us make sure that this isn't just a news piece. Let's take advantage of the attention on the issue and push for justice for those who have...

Update #2
Posted by Kathryn Johnson (Campaign Leader) on Oct 17, 2012Thank you for taking action! Pressure from Guatemalan civil society and the international community is working! Nine soldiers were arrested for extra-judicial execution including the Colonel who gave the order to advance on the protesters. Plus, President Perez Molina has promised to stop using soldiers to break up protests.
Now is the time to keep the pressure on; make sure that the President lives up to his word and that the investigation continues in order to hold everyone accountable...

I visited Guatemala in 1987, Antigua City, and was so impressed by the gentleness of the people and found the the nasty attitude of the military police so distasteful. The soldiers stopped pedistrians right in the middle of the crosswalk at rifle point and interrigated them. When I stared, astonished, the soldier swung the muzzle around and pointed it at me. There were soldiers lounging around in the bank, which can't inspire confidence in the business community there. I am so fortunate...

There were soldiers lounging around in the bank, which can't inspire confidence in the business community there. I am so fortunate not to have to live there, and I apologize to the people of Guatamala for any part the USA may have played in unfair treatment. I hope Guatemalans find a way to get out from under the domination of such abusive powers.
