Join the Clean Water Act Birthday Bash By Sharing Your Favorite Water Photo

We are throwing a birthday party for the Clean Water Act next week and you're invited!

With passage of this groundbreaking law in 1972, America made clean water a national priority. The Clean Water Act, one of the most broadly supported environmental laws in history, is turning 40 on October 18 and we want you to celebrate with us.

Post your favorite water photo in order to help us deliver a strong message to our decision-makers that clean water is a value that all Americans share.

We have seen many attempts in the past couple years to weaken the Clean Water Act and you have spoken up in defense of this fundamental tool in keeping our waterways safe and healthy.

We cannot afford to return to the days before the Clean Water Act, when rivers were treated as sewers for industry to dump their waste and only one-third of our waterways were fit for swimming or fishing.

Our waterways had become so choked with pollution, that in 1969 the Cuyahoga River in Ohio literally caught on fire.

But the American people stood up and demanded change. A few years later, the Clean Water Act was born!

Submit a picture of your favorite lake, stream, wetland or swimming hole. Tell us why you love it and please share this action on your timeline by clicking the button on the top right hand side.

We will create a virtual birthday party for the Clean Water Act with your pictures that we hope you will share with your friends and family on October 18.

We are also compiling stories on how the Clean Water Act has been a success in the Southeast that we will released that day.

Thanks for all you do to help protect America's waterways!

Sincerely,

Sandra Diaz

Hanging out at my favorite spot overlooking Lake Gaston, Va. Virginia Uranium is proposing a uranium mine in the Roanoke River watershed, an idea that various studies have deemed unaccceptable for its risk to water quality downstream. Virginia Beach, Va.'s largest city sources its water from Lake Gaston, contamination from uranium tailings would render it undrinkable and beyond repair.

I grew up across from a beautiful swamp, where I loved seeing all of the animals that lived there. I would hate to see anything happen to that ecosystem. The nearby Lake Ontario isn't nearly as beautiful as my grandparents describe it as it was years ago.
