Cyberknife Stereotactic Radiotherapy can offer hope to thousands of cancer patients for whom, conventional radiotherapy would not be an option. Unlike conventional radiotherapy it is super precise, and can therefore be used on areas such as the lung, liver, brain or spine. Conventional radiotherapy is seldom suitable for these areas, because of the risk of damage to healthy tissue. Even when conventional radiotherapy is used on these areas, it is only given at a palliative dose, and unfortunately this means cancer can return. But Cyberknife is so precise it causes virtually no damage to healthy tissue, and can therefore be used at a curative dose.
The British Government set up an expert Committee to look at the efficacy of stereotactic radiotherapy such as Cyberknife, and the Committee concluded that if available this type of radiotherapy could save in the region of 3000 lives per year. Yet the British Government still refuse to fund Cyberknife treatment.
Cancer Charities suggest that one in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer, and those who are not diagnosed will experience the agony of seeing of loved ones suffer . It is vital that we all demand that this treatment is funded now. Please write to your MP and spread the message.
