I pledge to say no to plastic bags!
Take the Pledge3,757 people took the pledge
The U.S. uses 100 billion plastic bags annually, which is the energy equivalent of 12 million barrels of oil (Worldwatch Institute. 2004 study). That's more than 250 bags per person, per year.
In 1977, the first plastic grocery bag was introduced to the supermarket industry. Since then, these single-use conveniences have become far too commonplace in our lives. They are used for a moment and stay with us for a lifetime, often found floating in our oceans, discarded on beautiful beaches, clogging drainage pipes, and killing wildlife. Our grandparents shopped without relying on plastic bags. Let's return to a time when we lived more sustainably.
We can break our dependance on plastics by working together. Join me in taking the pledge to say no to plastic bags and ask your friends to do the same.

It will be nice if we go back to paper bags like old days since paper bags serve many purposes like the old days, we use them for book covers during our old school days. PLUS MORE!
Soap and cold water with your towels once a year, I feel, is a small price to pay.
yes you will need to wash the bags occaisonally (sp?)... no biggie to toss in the was
I've been saying no for 3 years!
Cary Nasatir I have been using cloth bags for years. I use them until they fall apart and recycle them. In my town, they have banned plastic bags for about 6 months and it is a hell of a lot cleaner - no more bags hanging in trees and caught up on the rocks in the streams. It has made a huge, noticeable difference as to the environment around here and as our stream feeds into the watershed, it is saving marine life. Don't resist. Just do it. You can find other ways. You can put drum sticks into those thing paper bags (my husband drums, so I know they exist); find the space or find a solution,,, but dump the plastic.
It`s not just about the environment, there are lives at stake. Just put up a picture such as this one in the shop window and people will not need to be told anything, they will just bring their own non plastic bags.

no plastic!
I loved the video, it's a good way to inspire people to do something about our enviroment. No plastic!
Kathleen Grisham...thanks so much for the valuable information on hemp...I am sooo with you on this idea..maybe we could start a hemp awareness blog?
I hear you, but what are you proposing? because the idea of using paper ones have more impact on the planet, it takes way more energy, or are you proposing biodegradable plastic? ( http://www.reuseit.com/learn-more/myth-busting/why-paper-is-no-better-than-plastic ) and if so, how do you think it can be implemented in all your country to start with? it's also an economical situation wich can't only be solved with signing or promoting the ''no use of plastic bags'', so, what solution do you propose?
Have reusable bags. And use them until they wear out. And then recycle them. Cloth bags. Its not hard Maria Doble G Been doing it for years.
I keep cloth bags in each car try it!
I reuse my plastic grocery bags instead of buying so many trash bags. I don't throw them away. They all get used.
We should be more concerned about the tons of plastic packaging that we all throw away each year. There is too much packaging altogether, and far too many things, including food and drink containers and packaging, are made of plastic that should not be.
Paper bags are more damaging because of what paper processing does to the environment. Forests are devoured, water and air...

Paper bags are more damaging because of what paper processing does to the environment. Forests are devoured, water and air are polluted, harsh chemicals are used to break down wood into paper fiber, and fossil fuels are used to power the extensive processing required.
When we start making grocery bags of hemp, there will be a real alternative to both plastic and paper. Hemp needs little processing and is very strong and reusable.
George Washington and many others of his time grew hemp for rope, twine, cloth, etc. Hemp is quick and easy to grow and cheap and easy to process.
Any fabric will do because it's reusable and repairable. Most people bring home 10 or more bags each week and use 3 a week in their trash.
