Every day we hear of lives lost to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). At the SADS Foundation we hear about kids...almost 4,000 lives lost each year to SADS conditions (genetic heart conditions that left untreated can cause sudden death in the young). AEDS and CPR save lives - it's true. That's a fact. Please help us, will you? Sign, forward, post, tweet...let's get signatures, people!

  19. Update #36

Wanna burn off a few calories? Easy. Send this petition to 10 people you know and encourage them to sign! Oh...didn't you know that typing burns calories? Seriously though - saving lives with CPR and the use of an AED is easy, and will be really important to you at some point. With more than 1,000 people dying each day of sudden cardiac arrest - the odds are you'll need to know this information personally. So - sign, forward, pester your friends to sign, find your closest AED and learn CPR. Easy!!

  20. Update #35

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Nov 20, 2012

Here's a test. You're shopping on Friday - and you see someone collapse. Do you know what to do? First, call 9-1-1. Then get an automated external defibrillator (AED) if one is available and use it as soon as it arrives. Begin CPR immediately and continue until professional emergency medical services arrive. If two people are available to help, one should begin CPR immediately while the other calls 9-1-1 and finds an AED. Most of all - do SOMETHING. You could be a holiday hero.

  21. Update #34

Here's my brilliant idea for five minutes of entertainment this week while family and friends gather together. I'm not even kidding. Take advantage of having all the kids and grownups in one room and watch a hands only CPR video. This one will make you laugh, digest your feast better, and who knows - may save a life? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5hP4DIBCEE

  22. Update #33

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Nov 16, 2012

People are more likely to die of heart issues in the winter...odd but true. Would you know what to do if you witnessed a sudden cardiac arrest while shopping on Black Friday? You oughtta! 911 - CPR - AED. Easy. Please encourage friends and family to sign on to this life-saving petition.

  23. Update #32

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Nov 15, 2012

Did you know that children can have sudden cardiac arrests? It is not just an older person's problem. First, sign the petition - send it to your friends and then search the web for how to perform CPR on a child. Knowing CPR can make the difference in life and death situations.

  24. Update #31

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Nov 14, 2012

Remember - if someone has a sudden cardiac arrest - an AED cannot hurt them. You have to try. The AED will tell you exactly what to do. So - call 911, start CPR and get someone to run for the AED - then use it. It could save a life.

  25. Update #30

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Nov 13, 2012

Woo hoo! We did it! We passed 6,000 signatures this weekend. Let's keep the ball rolling and get 7,000, shall we? Just to put this in perspective, each DAY more than 1041 people die of sudden cardiac arrest. Yep - more than 1,000 a day. Raising awareness, learning CPR and using an AED will help - signing and forwarding this petition will help too.

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Nov 7, 2012

Now that the election is over it's a great time to remind our leaders, both new and returning, of the importance of life-saving AEDs in public places! We will extend our petition through the end of the year with the goal of reaching 10,000 signatures. We only need about 4,000 more! Will you help us get there?

  28. Update #27

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Nov 4, 2012

Members of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Coalition will be meeting tonight in Los Angeles. How cool would it be if we met our 6,000 goal by then? C'mon - it's just over a hundred more people needed. Please read, sign, forward, and help save lives!

  29. Update #26

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Nov 1, 2012

November is a SPLENDID month to learn CPR and to become familiar with your nearest AED (automated external defibrillator). You will definitely be the hero of any family gathering if YOU are the one to save a life from sudden cardiac arrest. Sign this petition, learn CPR, hug your AED.

  30. Update #25

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 31, 2012

CPR Isn't Scary! Halloween may be full of spooky ghosts and goblins but learning CPR and how to use an AED isn't scary. Seventy percent of Americans feel helpless during cardiac emergencies due to insecurities about their CPR skills but trick-or-treaters of any age can learn Hands-Only CPR to save a life. Take a moment, sign the petition, pass it on!

  31. Update #24

What would you do if you saw someone having a sudden cardiac arrest? Don't panic - just follow these steps: Call 911, begin CPR, use an AED. Sign this petition and spread the word.

  32. Update #23

Sign the petition, forward it to your friends.

  34. Update #21

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 25, 2012

Overheard at a recent CPR/AED training, "I never realized using an AED could be so easy!" This, my friends, could be you. AEDs are VERY simple to use. Pick it up - open it up - listen to it as it talks you through the steps. Do what it says and then stand back. The machine evaluates whether or not a shock is needed - it's not your call. But you can take credit when the person's life is saved!

  35. Update #20

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 23, 2012

I'm no mathematician, but if 380,000 people die each year from sudden cardiac arrest - that means we lose 31,666 people a month, 1041 people each day. That means 43 people per hour. That means one person every minute and a half. Yikes!! If you're going to take action to do anything today - sign this petition to get AEDS in public places. Yes - they save lives. Period.

  36. Update #19

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 22, 2012

It is time to take action! We need YOU to sign on to this life-saving petition today! Working together we can save lives.

  37. Update #18

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 18, 2012

Here's an interesting fact. Did you know that if a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) victim receives defibrillation through an AED within the first minute, the survival rate is 90%?
That means YOU need to use it. Have you seen your AED today? Please forward this to your friends and families...saving lives is what it's all about.

  38. Update #17

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 17, 2012

WAY TO GO!! We've now passed 5,000 signatures and are well on our way to 6,000! New videos have been added to the petition - take a minute or two to watch, then send to your friends and family members. Working together, we CAN save lives!

  39. Update #16

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 15, 2012

We're less than 100 people away from reaching our goal! Please watch the video, sign the petition and send to your friends. Working together, we ARE saving lives!

  40. Update #15

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 11, 2012

Today in our office, we had a refresher course with our AED to make sure it is up and running for our upcoming conference this weekend. His voice was loud and strong as he walked us through the steps of what to do in the event of a cardiac arrest. Do you know where your AED is? Watch, sign, save lives.

  41. Update #14

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 10, 2012

Did you know that all AED devices have voice prompts, enabling untrained bystanders to easily administer therapy with an AED? That's right - they talk to you and walk you through the steps. Sign our petition and share it today - we'll reach that 5,000 signature goal!

  42. Update #13

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 9, 2012

It has long been known that the speed of AED use by untrained children is only modestly slower than that of professionals. The difference between the groups is surprisingly small, considering the naïveté of the children as untutored first-time users. If your kid can use it - you can use it. Learn more. Sign the petition. Save lives.

  43. Update #12

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 8, 2012

Don't be afraid to grab the nearest AED if you see someone collapse suddenly. The AED, when applied, will look for a 'shockable' heart rhythm and will only deliver a shock if it is needed. If you haven't seen an AED before - find one! They're amazing and life-saving.

  44. Update #11

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 5, 2012

What Do You Do When SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) Strikes? A victim of sudden cardiac arrest will often complain of feeling "faint" or dizzy, usually during or just after exercise. They will rapidly become unconscious and may gasp for breath for a short time. If someone collapses and is not breathing:
    1. Call 911
    2. Start chest compressions
    3. Get an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
    4. Turn it on and follow the voice prompts
And if you need a quick tutorial with a little BeeGee action, watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5hP4DIBCEE.

  45. Update #10

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 4, 2012

Fast fact about surviving a sudden cardiac arrest: A shock delivered by an automated external defibrillator (AED) within 3 to 5 minutes can save a life. Do you know how to use an AED? Today's the day, folks.

  46. Update #9

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 3, 2012

Did you know that the only ways to hurt someone with an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is to hit them in the head with it or not use it at all? AEDs are simple to use. If you witness someone having a cardiac event, open it and a soothing voice guides you through the steps of what to do. Then the machine evaluates whether or not a shock is appropriate - it's not up to you. If you haven't noticed AEDs around - take a minute and find them. You can save a life!

  47. Update #8

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 2, 2012

Huge support today for our push to save lives from sudden cardiac arrest, let's keep the momentum going! Did you know that Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a condition in which the heart stops abruptly, without warning? It is usually caused by ventricular fibrillation, an abnormality in the heart's electrical system. In this state, the heart fails to pump blood to the body's other vital organs. Death can follow within minutes. Be prepared to take action - call 911, perform CPR, use an AED!

  48. Update #7

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Oct 1, 2012

Today marks the first day of Sudden Cardiac Arrest awareness month. Throughout October, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Coalition (a coalition of more than 45 non-profits all focused on reducing the incident of sudden cardiac death) have banded together to raise awareness. Signing this petition is a great way to show your support for this life-saving effort. And invite your friends! Together, we will save lives!

  49. Update #6

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Sep 28, 2012

Would you recognize a sudden cardiac arrest if you saw it or know what to do about it? First - call 911 - start CPR - hands only - press on the chest as fast and as hard as you can - and get the AED and use it! You can't hurt anyone with an AED - but you can save lives. Sudden cardiac arrest is the nation's #1 killer. Please encourage your friends, family and colleagues to sign this petition...who knows whose life it may save?

  50. Update #5

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Sep 24, 2012

Fantastic to see all of the support for this petition! All the members of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Coalition (SCAC) are busily gathering signatures. It will be so great to present it to the US Secretary of Education and the Director of Health and Human Services with tens of thousands of names! Please keep up your great support, invite friends...this WILL save lives.

  54. Update #1

Posted by Laura M. Wall (Campaign Leader) on Sep 8, 2012

Less than 40 hours old, this petition is on the brink of breaking our modest 1,000 person goal! Let's keep going and reach tens of thousands. Help us raise more awareness about sudden cardiac arrest - the leading cause of death in the US. Send this petition to 25 people you know, tell them about the person you know who has died due to a sudden cardiac arrest - we all know them. Thank you for helping us raise awareness! Working together - we can make a difference. Public access to AEDs is a great start!

Thanks Joyce!

I signed this petition in honor of my dear son, Anthony! Won't you take a moment in your day and place your name on the petition to protect young people from Sudden Cardiac Arrest through placement of AEDs (automatic external defibrillators) in schools and public places everywhere! The next person saved by an AED could be someone you know and love!

I'm scared to watch the video

My dad went into cardiac arrest that was caused by pneumonia at North Florida Regional Medical Center. They told me he came back the first time, but not the second time.

I have 3 children with Long Q-T Syndrome---2 survivors and my only son died as a result of it. Because he died so publically, on the basketball court at a 7th grade ball game, our county bought devices for each school in the school system.

Thanks Alison Bell Burton for sending me this petition!!! God bless!!!!
