Tell Lonmin to meet workers demands for higher wages and better living conditions!

We, the international community, demand that you raise the monthly minimum pay for the workers at your platinum mine in South Africa! As the world's third largest platinum producer, it’s shocking that you only pay your workers the equivalent of $690 a month, forcing them to live without electricity, running water, or accessible health services. We demand that you provide the workers with a fair wage ($1560) and contribute more fairly to their livelihoods.

Last week, your mine workers walked off the job, refusing to return to work until the you raised their wages and improved their living conditions. As the workers demonstrated outside the mine on Thursday, South African police officers opened fire on the protesters, killing 34 people and sending 78 others to the hospital in critical condition. Yet even in the face of bloodshed, intimidation, and threats - 70% of the miners remain defiant and refuse to return to work until their demands are met.

The strike has already caused your company’s shares on the stock market to drop nearly 15% below their usual value. Furthermore, according to your statement yesterday, should the unrest continue, Lonmin will be unable to meet its annual target production of 750,000 ounces of platinum. For the sake of your own company’s financial future, as well as the thousands of miners that Lonmin employs, we ask that you raise workers wages and improve living conditions surrounding your platinum mine in South Africa!

As the world's leading producer of platinum and one of the top gold producers, South Africa has become the richest nation in Africa in recent years. Still, the country has over a 25% unemployment rate. Protests against shortages of housing, electricity, running water, as well as poor education and health services occur on an almost daily basis. The miserable living conditions of the Lonmin platinum miners is a reflection of the deep inequalities that still pervade this society 18 years after the end of apartheid. Their shantytown consists of run-down shacks on a dusty plain outside the mine, lacking running water and electricity. The miners can not afford anything more on the abysmal salaries they bring home after laboring in the nearby mine.

Now these miners are taking a courageous stand by going on strike, giving the world a view of Lonmin's unethical treatment of its workers. Their strike sets a precedent for all South African miners; demands for higher wages have now spread to at least two other neighboring mines. Their actions also send a powerful message to big, international corporations hoping to make a profit by overworking and underpaying their workers.

Add your voice to the international call for justice for the Lonmin mine workers in South Africa!

Though half a world away, all of us at Share Worldwide are celebrating today with the miners at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine in South Africa, who began today! Lonmin agreed to a pay deal, giving its 28,000 workers up to a 22 percent pay raise.

As exciting as this victory is for all of us who signed the petition to Lonmin, the past couple weeks exposed the inequalities between a small, politically connected elite and the majority of impoverished people in South Africa. As labor unrest...

As labor unrest continues at other mines across the country, look out for more opportunities we promote to advocate for justice and human rights for all!

Its disgraceful that good , honest workers are being paid a pittance while the huge corporations are taking huge profits and lining their pockets..pay them a decent wage treat them with dignity and respect!

R9500 or R10500 per month is a good wage? Doing the same work in Australia you would get around R15000 per week and the companies are still making huge profits. Do you live on R9500 Sharon?

Violeta Bozinovska

and much less per month!.... and less showing off how Australia is very rich and more making plans to take over workers there will be better for both:))...but they might not like Australia due to a lot of radiation there:DDDD...might count as bad living conditions:D

I have just received an email Thanking me for signing the petition , and I'm pleased to say that the works have now received a 22% increase in their wages , whilst it may not be enough , at least the ball has started rolling for better working conditions , and this is the best news I have received this week...

It's something.

As ive mentioned , at least its a start Neil,,,

its a shame on president Jacob Zuma, that the sharpville episode that led to a concerted effort against apartheid is being re-enacted under a black president, IN ADDITION TO THE DEMANDS OF THE MINERS, PRESIDENT ZUMA SHOULD RESIGN WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY, HIS REGIME HAS NOT ONLY INSULTED THE LIVING LEGEND, BUT HAS GIVEN A SERIOUS BLOW TO THE SACRIFICES OF FATHER NELSON MANDELA.

End this injustice!

So another innocent worker is murdered by these thugs in the name of a better salary. I wonder if we are going to see most you of you sign a petition against the killing of innocent victims who is not partaking in this march and who does not agree with the cause of these miners. You people are fooled in to believing that this strike is for salaries. This is a turf war of unions and nothing else

I find it depressing that the ordinary people of South Africa are still being repressed and ignored by their own black government. Why hasn't their living conditions improved - why has their government not looked into their working conditions at the mine?

The mines should be given back to the people of South Africa.

Cynthia Le Roux

In the ideal world this would be perfect except for the fact that this country is governed by greedy corrupt spineless people who would make the miners' lives even worse than now if the mines were nationalised.

Marcus Tsiakos

@ Ryan and who exactly would you say are the people of south africa ????????

The point is this is not an isolated matter (SA) any longer because of the media and technology (web) it has become an international matter and to icing on the cake as I remarked in my previous posting Lomnin is an International Mining Company. Who are the companies that purchase these salts or what ever they purchase in it's finished state from Lomnin? Surely this insanity has awoken their attention. I can remember in the not to distant past when things did not go according to various political persasions/pressures their were sanctions and imbagos implemented.

Anyone know where we can one find out what the "Platinum metal or the salt" that is mined at Lomnin end products are and were they are sold and by whom? That way we can refuse to buy them untill this matter is resolved.
