According to a "recent report" by the Center for Economic Policy and Research, the United States is the only industrial nation that does not guarantee paid sick leave for workers suffering from either short-term or long-term illnesses. This shocking finding means that forty million Americans – 40% of private-sector workers and more than 80% of low-wage workers — do not get paid sick days to care for their own health or that of a loved one. Not only does this injustice force caregivers to choose between their work lives and their family's well-being – it also poses a threat to public health. The same study revealed that adults without paid sick days are more likely than their counterparts with paid sick days to report going to work with a contagious illness (like the flu or a viral infection), risking infecting others.
Paid sick days would benefit the 66 million American adults who are unpaid caregivers for family members or friends, allowing them to manage both their caregiving responsibilities and the jobs they need to support their families. Furthermore, it would also save employers money. The cost of replacing workers - including advertising positions, interviewing, and training replacements - are in many cases greater than the cost of granting paid sick time in order to keep existing workers.
In 2009, Connecticut Representative Rosa DeLauro introduced The Healthy Families Act - a measure that would require employers with 15 or more workers to grant their employees up to seven paid sick days a year to care for a child, a parent, a spouse or someone else close who became ill. A coalition of approximately 150 women's, civil rights, health, faith-based, and labor organizations (including the AFL-CIO, American Civil Liberties Union, Center for American Progress Action Fund, Economic Policy Institute, Families USA and many others) has since formed to support the bill's passage. However, corporate lobbyists have taken great strides to block the legislation, causing the Healthy Families Initiative to languish in committee for the past three years.
We need your help to pressure our elected Representatives to salvage this crucial bill! In order to strengthen jobs and the economy, protect public health and give working families a helping hand - support the passage of paid sick days for all!

Update #1
Posted on Aug 16, 2012Did you know that the United States is one of only a handful of countries in the world that doesn't guarantee paid sick days? Those who also neglect to provide their workers with this benefit include Syria, Chad, Boznia and Herzegovina, India, and a few others.
…
While America is one of the wealthiest and most productive countries in the world, hardworking citizens in this country routinely suffer pay deductions and losses of jobs for conditions they cannot control. Keep inviting your friends...

I noticed its very hard finding a job with good benefits these days, just rare to find. I did have one in a Uni and ended up being pushed out cos of my health, could never get another with those benefits since, its such a shame
I thought we are entitled to a few/month; at least we used to be, although I never took them even if I was in pain because I had too much work to do to take a day off, and so did my mother.
except for one day when I was bleeding to death on my way to work and I practically passed out...(got fired for missing work that day) usually would have been at work already and have to just keep on working like that...bloody all over, doing laundry in the bathroom sink...and you wonder why "we just don't get along"
my ex-sister-in-law, who decided to keep the $150K that she and my ex-brother owed me, said in that bloody scene, "Everybody bleeds"
First we need a law since common sense isn't common that gives assistance to the caregiver. My life partner of 22 years had to quit his job to take care of me.The" system" states I make to much money for assistance to pay for gas for the car to get back and forth to the doctor. They say use the bus service provided by the stàte. I see people waiting in the heat or cold for the buses to return to pick them up to take them home. Food stamps $16 for the month for two people are they for real....

I'm on my 4th diagnosis of cancer since 1993 so that should tell you how long he has been out of work.Trying to keep the lights on paying the mgt and medical bills something gotta give. People that really need help can't get it but those with 4 and 5 babies a choice they made on their on can get it all.
I hear you Cuz, i know two people who have worked 30 or more years without any tyoe of assistance and are now sick and can not get any help. This is why we need to clean out the House and the Senate and elect new people who will be working for our benefit insteand of working for Corporate America.
I feel your pain! I've been in your shoes. I'm praying for you.
Paid sick leaves are basic right of each employee.
health care and education should be free in this country.
Jennifer Phillips ummm lol thats not free... maybe public schools but thats about it....
Nothing is free. Anything billed as "free" is horrendously expensive, especially if managed by government.
