Save the stage - Protect school music programs
- Posted to Save School Music!
To: Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education
We respectfully urge you to protect school music by making the programs a national policy priority. School music programs create a unique opportunity for children to directly engage in performing arts and have a chance to realize their potential through cultural enrichment and personal...

Plato once said that music "is a more potent instrument than any other form of education". A recent study from the University of California supported the Greek philosopher's theory, demonstrating that music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Second graders who were given music lessons scored 27% higher on proportional math and fractions tests than children who received no special instruction.
Despite the proven power of music, looming cuts to the federal education budget are forcing schools across the nation to make tough decisions about program funding; sadly, many are opting to cut the arts, especially music.
These across-the-board spending cuts are set to take effect in January of 2013 – unless we pressure our elected officials to make school music programs a priority, our children may lose a critical part of their education forever!
As John Sykes, President of VH1, says: "music education is critical to the product development of this nation's most important resource – our children." Sign the petition today to protect school music programs!

School music has saved my life. As a child growing up, I had learning disabilities. Back then ADD, short term memory, and processing issues went undiagnosed and ignored. I believed that I was just stupid, until I joined marching band and choir. Marching band, Choir, and drama gave me a reason to believe in myself and not give up. While academics will always be a struggle for me I excel in music and it is all because I was able be a part of music programs in high school. I have passed...

I believed that I was just stupid, until I joined marching band and choir. Marching band, Choir, and drama gave me a reason to believe in myself and not give up. While academics will always be a struggle for me I excel in music and it is all because I was able be a part of music programs in high school. I have passed this love of marching band onto my children and my daughter is not majoring in music at college and will someday be a high school band director.
Please make sure that she takes a good minor to go with the music major...so she has another course of action to go into. Because the way that music is getting cut from school programs, I would hate to see her work hard to get a music teaching degree...and have no school to hire her. It's already bad and getting worse-music and arts are becoming like tumbleweeds in the ghosts towns we used to call great schools. So sad...
And you were NEVER stupid, Serena...we all helped each other at MCC...I so miss those days of our study groups at Wags...you, Beth, Lester...sigh. Good times...and better memories.
I always say that music is good for the soul.
Music is therapy. Many kids have a hard time expressing themselves. Being able to sing out low relieves stress, emotionally and physically. The arts have always been a form of expression that humans have used to communicate. It is a shame that this would be the first thing that our government would cut out of our education system. We already are behind academically. Most countries are flourishing their future leaders by giving them a well rounded education, including having them develop in...
