During the 2008 presidential elections, thousands of military voters were denied their civic voices when absentee ballots were sent to wrong addresses, lost in the mail, or –through no fault of their own – arrived after the election deadline. To prevent the future disenfranchisement of American soldiers, Congress passed the MOVE act in 2009 requiring state and county officials to mail absentee ballots at least 45 days before an election to give overseas military voters sufficient time to cast their votes. Unfortunately, many states have refused to amend their state laws and failed to ensure that counties mailed their ballots in a timely manner. As a result, less than 5% of 2.5 million military voters had an absentee ballot that counted in the 2010 midterm elections

During a presidential election year, with a military force totaling more than 3 million active-duty and reserve forces serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, we cannot allow systemic inefficiencies to silence our men and women in uniform. The Military Voter Protection Project (MVP) is working to pressure state and county officials to mail military voters their absentee ballots in a timely fashion. You have the power to support their important initiative by forcing states to comply with the provisions of the MOVE Act. Please ensure that the votes of all our national heroes are counted this year!

The Military Voter Protection Project (MVP) has launched a new Heroes Vote Initiative to ensure that America’s service members have their voices heard in the upcoming presidential election. Due to the transitory nature of military life and the slow delivery process of absentee ballots, especially to war zones, military voters face significant challenges when attempting to cast their votes. This issue became glaringly apparent during the 2010 midterm elections when only 4.6 percent of military voters were able to cast a valid ballot, according to data from the Federal Election Assistance Commission.

The MOVE Act, which passed in Congress in 2009, aimed to protect the voting rights of American soldiers abroad by requiring states to allow a 45-day window for mail delivery of absentee ballots. However, many states failed to implement the law two years ago, once again costing our men and women in uniform their votes.

As November draws closer, MVP’s nationwide campaign is calling on the Voting Section of the Department of Justice to pressure states to comply with the MOVE Act and ensure that military absentee ballots are not lost in the mail, delivered too late, or never delivered at all. They are also rallying local military and veterans groups, as well as state and local election officials, to make military voters a priority. Sign the petition to tell the Voting Section of the Department of Justice to pressure state and county officials to enforce the MOVE act, giving military voters their rightful opportunity to participate in the upcoming presidential elections. Those who lay it on the line for us deserve to take part in the very democracy they fight to defend!

The good news is that our voices are starting to be heard – just last week the nonpartisan Military Voter Protection Project commended in a news release many states' efforts to protect veterans' voting rights. After analyzing each state's legislative efforts to eliminate barriers to military voter participation and to assist military members serving abroad, they named 15 states as All-Stars of this cause. Among the recognized states were Virginia, Texas, and Florida – is your state ensuring our heroes are protected at home while serving abroad?

With the clock ticking until the November elections, we need to keep putting pressure on states to ensure that our brave servicemen and women have the opportunity to weigh in on selecting our next President. Invite your friends to sign the petition!
