To the Canadian Government,
we the undersigned demand that Canada bring its laws in line with the United States, which requires all fur be labelled.
Canada needs to join in with many other countries worldwide and send a strong message to the Chinese that there is no need for this type of product, and when there is no demand the killing will stop.
The imported Fur comes from stolen pets, animals gathered and transported cruelly and then slaughtered inhumanely.
Most Western countries restrict imports of dog and cat fur.
Canada has no restrictions on fur imports, except for endangered species.
We request that Canada join The U.S., European Union and Australia and put in place a law that bans importing cat and dog fur, whether it’s trim on a parka or the cuff on leather gloves, and stop the inhumanity.
Because the cat and dog fur is often exported from China as trim on inexpensive garments, the U.S. tightened its ban in 2010 by requiring that all fur products be labeled — even those valued under $150 — for country of origin and species.

Canada has no similar requirements, despite the introduction of several private member’s bills in Parliament. Activists say that Canada could become a dumping ground for this fur, if they continue this importation of fur, and condone the Chinese cruelty.
Thankyou..

Shangcun is the rural epicentre of China’s fur-pelt industry. More than 60 per cent of the country’s trade in unprocessed fur is conducted on the streets and in open-air markets of the tiny town about 100 kilometres south of Beijing.

In one corner of the market animals are killed. Women snatch the live animals by their back legs then smash their heads on the hard ground, or strike them over the head with a bamboo pole. The animals are stripped of their fur, which is stretched over wide wooden paddles.

This is the blood and guts of China’s flourishing fur industry.
China is the world’s largest exporter of fur garments, most made from mink, fox and raccoon dog.

Consequently, China’s garment factories have developed a voracious appetite for fur of all kinds. International clothing makers that use fur have added to the demand, opening operations in China to take advantage of the country’s cheap labour and lack of animal cruelty laws.
The requirements are so great that China has become the world’s largest importer of raw fur.

The demand is also satisfied another way — with domestic dog and cat fur. Animal rights activists say some of the fur comes from stolen pets, animals gathered and transported cruelly and then slaughtered inhumanely.

Most Western countries restrict imports of dog and cat fur. But not Canada.

“No one sells cat and dog fur here because it’s free,” says one vendor.
It is a free because it is a byproduct of the country’s enormous dog and cat meat-slaughter industry.
Rural food markets sell live and recently butchered dogs and cats, while larger food processing plants grind the flesh into mass-market products. For example, dog is used to flavour inexpensive instant noodles sold in accurately labeled packages throughout the country. Dog meat is a staple for many rural families.

But the emerging animal welfare community has forced the cat and dog fur business into hiding.
This element of the fur industry operates under the radar, in private negotiations with slaughter houses, tanning factories, garment manufacturers and exporters.

It begins with men called “bunchers” who collect dogs and cats until they have enough dogs to sell to a food-processing plant or enough cats to peddle at markets that deal with restaurants. Most of this trade takes place in provinces in the south and in the northeast.

The furs come from the food-processing plants and restaurants as byproducts.
Garments made from dog and cat fur are sold in markets and stores, as well as on China’s version of eBay, called taobao.com — often as jackets or vests but also as fashion accessories, trinkets and trims, even as cat-fur car seat upholstery and dog-pelt mattress covers.

Mona Lung, a Beijing-based project officer for the animal rights group ACTAsia, estimates two million cats and dogs are slaughtered each year in China.

The U.S., European Union and Australia have laws that ban importing cat and dog fur, whether it’s trim on a parka or the cuff on leather gloves.
Canada has no restrictions on fur imports, except for endangered species.

According to Industry Canada, 60 per cent of all fur garments that enter Canada come from China, trade worth about $12 million annually.

Because the cat and dog fur is often exported from China as trim on inexpensive garments, the U.S. tightened its ban in 2010 by requiring that all fur products be labeled — even those valued under $150 — for country of origin and species.

I've been horrified by what I've learned in regards to the laws of Canada and the USA on leather products being imported. The USA has passed a law for better labeling on leather and fur products being imported. Canada authorities are still shamefully on the fence.
It is disgusting that in 2012, cats and dogs are still being TORTURED and slaughtered for their fur and leather products and then put in our stores for purchase. The excuse is always, it isn't against the law. Is there a law of conscience and humanity? We as consumers can change this torture and abuse when we ALL do our duty and get involved.

Cat and Dog farms are a way of industry in China to provide cheap leather and fur to be used on garmets, fur woven into textiles, leather handbags, coats, gloves, dog and cat toys, where ever fur or leather is used.

Dogs and cats are raised for meat and are tortured horrifically before the die. Dogs, cats, rabbits are skinned alive, the hair is burnt with torches off of alive cats. Cats are boiled alive. Dogs are tortured and slaughtered in front of other dogs to raise their fear. Chinese doctors perpetuate this belief that the meat of a tortured animal increases a mans virility. All this torture for sex? They say this tortured dog and cat meat is also beneficial for arthritis. This is a situation where I couldn't possibly exaggerate, words can not describe the cruelty done to animals in China all in the name of culture and commerce. China is not alone in this insanity.
Canada's labeling laws are extremely lax. We as consumers are dooped into thinking our laws protect the consumer but in this incident, we are unwittingly purchasing cat and dog leather and fur without our knowledge. We assumed our Canadian government had our best interest as a consumer that this wasn't happening but they full well know it is and do nothing. Why I ask myself does our government lie to us about this? Are we beholding to China? Probably. Its all about commerce, its all about the money.
Cat and dog meat, fur and leather is a big industry in China. Korea, Taiwan are also in the mix of things to name a few more.

Christine, what you say is true of meat eaters. One has a moral and ethical obligation l to know the truth about what they are wearing- or eating.

I saw a special report years ago on 20/20 that will haunt me for the rest of my life. I can still remember what they showed, kittens hung from the top of the cage with strings till dead and the one that really haunts me the most is the dog that wagged its tail as an ignorant man skinned him alive. I cannot imagine how people can be so heartless. To me this is evil at work and it needs to be stopped!!!!!!!!!

I refuse to knowingly buy ANYTHING from bloody China. Their practices are disgusting and inhuman. Cruel, evil SCUM!

Right on Jack, you took the words right out of my mouth. I would gladly kick the shit out of all my Canadian neighbors and Chinese for that matter but unfortunately there are stricter laws for protecting asshole people from abuse than
poor defenseless animals.

I have been to Korea and it would break my heart to see dogs cramped in small cages to be taken for consumption and then seeing them hanging from hooks in the markets. I wanted to unleash all the ones I saw tied up, it still makes me sick...

So evil china is, they only care about money and power. They are overcrowded even when they try to control the population so they just turn a blind eye. They're are just some disgusting people their and it would be so easy to go their and take some of the killers out.
