During this presidential campaign season, promise to create veteran-specific platforms that address our soldiers’ needs

This Memorial Day, millions of Americans will be saluting the many sacrifices our troops have made to secure our freedom. But our soldiers need more. Many are underserved medically and financially as VA budgets continue to be cut in Washington, D.C.

As candidates, you’re in a position to give our troops support this weekend and beyond. Too often the campaign trail devolves into patronizing applause for men and women who have served, without addressing their daily concerns. Show real respect for our troops and our democracy by providing a robust, aggressive veteran-specific platform that invests in our soldiers as citizens. Show our servicemen and women that they’re remembered every day.

Veteran unemployment is at 13%. The soldier suicide rate has skyrocketed. Money that was once provided for service members and their families is being diverted to fund higher weapons spending.

Our soldiers are facing very real issues. And it's time these issues are addressed.

But too often politicians put the concerns of our troops to the sidelines in favor of patriotic speeches that praise our soldiers while offering nothing to help them. The uniform should symbolize more than a photo op on the campaign trail.

This Memorial Day, let’s remind politicians that they need to take up the issues of our armed forces. Tell them to commit to small business loans for vet entrepreneurs. Make them push to improve the VA hospitals to help soldiers deal with their postwar physical and psychological needs. Have them fight to protect VA funding and the Post-9/11 GI Bill from budget cuts.

In this big election year, our presidential candidates need to hear this message the most. Sign the petition and tell them that our troops are too important not to be presented with actual platforms for their issues. This is the weekend to start giving soldiers the support they really need.

Thanks for signing the petition – you've all helped to make veterans' needs an issue that Obama and Romney won't be able to ignore on the campaign trail. At a recent Minneapolis fundraiser President Obama claimed that, "standing up for our veterans is not a Democratic responsibility, it's not a Republican responsibility, it's an American responsibility." And just last week Mitt Romney praised "the great men and women of every generation who serve in our armed services."

    Please keep inviting...

if a politician like congressman retires he gets a big pension for paper pushing while our fellow americans dodge bullets and keep us safe and in rerturn we treat them like vagabons looking for a handout freaking Insane! Our soldiers should get a free pass for the rest of their lives in this country at least with taxes and healthcare. I doulble dog dare you mr. Obama step up and do something for your country, if this really is your country and pass some REAL legislation1.

No one cares about other Human Beings anymore. Even though GOD says we are to love and take care of one another GREED takes over.

They are there for us we should be her for them. We known the pain. Say thank you by supporting them. We send the Best off to war to fight for us.

Well, I'm really concerned, in the event of a few issues, however the one that really is strong with me is, when a wife loses her husband in line of duty, dose the children of that Veteran obtain a full paid scholarship to the college of their choice, and what programs are in place to mentor her young children through the absence of that parent?

If you are a responsible taxpayer, this should also stress you that the US dollars you use have such blood on it!!! We as Americans give great glory and money to Movie/Theater SuperStars, and to the mother and child of murderd Millitary we say little or nothing.....come let your voice be heard on this injustice and sign this petition.

This last Christmas Eve, my husband died from Cancer that was caused by Agent Orange in Viet Nam 41 years ago. He spent 3 months in and out of the Nashville V.A. Hospital. Care was poor, at best. We were pushed from one "advocate" to another, but always coming up against the same road blocks of red tape and no answers, no help. 5 months after my husbands death, I am still against those same dead ends and lack of real help. SOMETHING MUST CHANGE FOR ALL VETS AND THEIR FAMILIES! I will support candidates who vow to make changes and then really do it! But I will NOT vote for "promise everything and do nothing candidates"! The costs are too high for our brave patriot men and women who have served America in every corner of the World. WE MUST SEE CHANGE! The new vets coming home from present day wars, must not experience what the Vets from 40 years and more ago are experiencing. The red tape must be shredded! Advocacy must be better trained and made more sensitive. V.A. Hospitals must be better staffed with sympathetic doctors, nurses, etc. and not be the hellholes that I have seen firsthand. I say if something has to be cut, then cut the paycheck of those that lamely serve us in Washington D.C. And start with the President's paycheck! And every senator and congress member should not have opportunity to get wealthy on the backs of our brave men and women. If they have to have a "conference" in some place other than Washington.. then let them pay the "tab" for themselves! I am a fed-up American demanding REAL CHANGE.

You preach it, girl! I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said!

Justice requires that we treat our veterans with appreciation, help and respect.

I hope we take better care of these brave men & women than we did those returned from Veitnam. Our praise is not enough they need care and funds for their families. With our government & our economy in the state it's in , where will our returning Americans who are able to, find work or afford to feed their famillies..God help us all.

Time to give every American a "wake-up" call!

True heroes. Let's never forget to keep them in our thoughts & prayers.

My son Nick Butera who is only going to be 20 years old and all the other men who are fighting for our country and the people should always be remembered and never forgotten. I love you Nick and all the other young men and woman who are protecting our country. These are the ones who should be protected. The ones who lost their lives fighting for our country should never be forgotten for what they have done..I am so proud of all of you and my son Nick for what you all do for our country..
