Stop the EPA from including palm-oil based biofuels in the Renewable Fuel Standard!

Of all the biofuels, palm oil causes the most pollution. In order to make room for palm oil plantations, growers will clear and burn dense rainforests (many of them on carbon-rich peatland.) This destructive practice kills many endangered species each year and leads to widespread deforestation in all the tropical areas north and south of the equator where palm oil is being grown. Indonesia and Malaysia - the areas with the largest palm oil producers – have been most affected and Indonesia has become the world’s third biggest global warming polluter.

Due to these alarming issues, the EPA recently decided that palm oil should not be included in the Renewable Fuel Standard. However, your agency is now coming under immense pressure from lobbyists to overturn this preliminary decision. The rainforests are the lungs of our planet and must be protected – please don’t cave to lobbyist demands and overturn your original decision!

In addition to the devastation that palm oil production wrecks on the environment, palm oil-based biodiesel also fails to meet a Renewable Fuel Standard requirement of offering 20% reduction in emissions relative to conventional gasoline.

By signing the petition, you will help fight the use palm-oil based biofuels and help to protect rainforests and wildlife, such as orangutans. Currently, on Indonesian island of Sumatra, the world's densest population of orangutans is on the edge of annihiliation as a massive wave of fires started by palm oil plantation owners in direct defiance of national law.
