The American people have made their voice heard on genetically-modified food -- 90% want GMOs labeled. The new strain of 2,4-D-resistant corn is the latest example of a potentially dangerous food product that, if allowed, will be sold to unknowing consumers. We demand that you, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), protect consumers by requiring the labeling of GMO foods.

Additionally, further independent studies should be commissioned immediately to fully understand the effects of pesticide-resistant GMO seeds on our health.

Genetically-modified (GMO) foods are becoming more and more prevalent, though you as the consumer won’t ever know that you’re eating them because the FDA doesn't require that information on labels. Sugary drinks can be marketed as full of ‘vitamins’ and breakfast cereal boxes are emblazoned with ‘gluten-free’ or ‘whole grain’ claims, yet you have no information about whether your food has been modified to be resistant to pesticides that may cause cancer.

50 countries, including China and all of the EU, already have laws to label GMO foods. The full potential for health risks from GMO foods is unknown but ranges from allergies to cancer and birth defects. Through genetic modification, strains of crops are growing resistant to certain pesticides, which leads to the development of new GMO strains that can resist even stronger pesticides.

The FDA says labeling isn't necessary for GMOs because they aren’t that different from non-modified foods. Certainly, more research is needed on how GMO foods affect our health; but in the meantime, these foods should at least be labeled because we as consumers have a right to know exactly what we put in our bodies.

Over 90% of Americans have expressed that they believe GMOs should be properly labeled. By ignoring such strong popular support for labeling, the FDA seems complicit in hiding unpleasant side effects, and valuing corporations over consumers.
