Our country prides itself in its humanity and liberty. Yet chimpanzees are still subject to inhumane experiments with painful diseases, lifeless environments and decades of invasive procedures that effectively torture these intelligent creatures. And we have little to show for it.

In fact, the US is the only industrialized nation left to use chimpanzees as experimental subjects for studies on human illnesses, an archaic form of research with unreliable results. This barbaric method makes the US look out of touch with the scientific community at large, and undercuts our credibility across the globe.

Hundreds of these apes are heartlessly neglected once their study ends, with as many as 80% being warehoused after testing to languish in their cage for the rest of their lives. Alone and deprived of freedom or social interaction, many sink into depression and madness.

They’ve been tested. They’ve been tortured. It’s time to let them go home.

Please quickly pass the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. Put an end to the unnecessary trauma inflicted on hundreds of chimps and raise our scientific standards to match the rest of the world, while providing safe haven for the apes currently trapped in this cruel cycle of abuse.

Despite overwhelming research that says ape testing yields unreliable results, more than 900 of these creatures are locked up in government-funded US laboratories. They endure painful procedures infecting them with diseases like HIV and hepatitis and are locked up for decades, deprived of their basic desires.

These practices fly in the face of the landmark National Academy of Sciences report that studied the scientific validity of experiments on chimpanzees. It concluded that, "most current biomedical research use of chimpanzees is not necessary," prompting the National Institutes of Health to suspend funding for future experiments on chimpanzees.

The majority of the worldwide scientific community agrees with these findings. Furthermore, the entire European Union unanimously agreed on the cruelty and irrelevance of ape experimentation and banned it completely.

That just leaves us. The US is torturing chimps to conduct experiments with questionable results that won’t be taken seriously by the scientific community as a whole because...that’s how we’ve always done it?

This is not progress. This is incompetence. And it’s at the expense of innocent creatures.

The Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act (H.R. 1513/S. 810) effectively ends this outdated practice, retiring all federally owned chimps to permanent sanctuaries where they can live out the rest of their lives with freedom and care.

The bill also prevents all future federally funded projects from ape experimentation, removing this blemish from the US scientific community.
