Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn, TD, we want you to refuse to allow IGB seduce kids into gambling and animal abuse by offering tours of greyhound stadium for school children and goody bags. Surely the high incidence of both gambling addictions and animal abuse in Ireland should be a red flag to anyone concerned about children’s welfare.

The Irish Greyhound Board, the IGB, are now offering students and teachers tours of Greyhound stadia around the country. The greyhound breeding industry in Ireland has a history of drugging, mutilating, dumping and putting down dogs who are no longer useful to the industry.
This is being put forward as an 'educational' day out. Do we really want to 'educate' kids about animals this way. Why not bring them to an animal shelter - teach them that all living things need love and care, just like humans and should be respected, not used for our entertainment. Teach them how to take care of animals, encourage them to become Ireland's future vets and animal behaviourists.

This is beyond words.....

Signed. Animal abuse in general is unfortunately rife in Ireland.

99% of greyhound people are like myself Nick. Do you consider me to be a cruel animal abuser?

Nic Slocum

Of course not Yvonne...I am not sure how accurate your 99% is though - you would know though. I believe there are abuses perpetrated within the Greyhound racing community...not just in Ireland though. If it is only 1% that abuse then it still has to be addressed. Only a small percentage of commercial fishermen through waste oil over the side but it gives everyone a bad name!

discusting!

Totally opposed to educating' pupils in this way.

an attempt to groom a new batch of supporters for an industry that has very poor standards in reporting animal abuse among its members, and if the report of a free goody bag is correct, then we have promotion of gambling to children along with a reward, that is grooming a new batch of gamblers as well. The IGB marketing dept have really thought about this. I have faith the Minister will see this for what it is.

Where are the heads of these educators bringing school kids to see this? Up their asses? They should be getting their students involved in putting an end to this abuse.....not using it as a day trip excuse! I shake my head at the ignorance around us concerning ethical treatment of animals.
