Overfishing is destroying the marine ecosystem by depleting fish stocks that hundreds of millions of people worldwide depend on for food and livelihood. Scientists predict that the global fish supplies could collapse by 2050 because many species are being fished faster than they can reproduce.
Seafood Watch, a sustainable seafood advisory program, publishes a guide that rates seafood by their fishing methods. 'Green' rated fish are abundant and sustainably harvested, while 'yellow' rated fish are good alternatives, though there are concerns about how they are sourced.
'Red' rated seafood species are fish that are being harvested faster than they can replenish themselves. Fishing red rated species also results in environmental side effects like the total destruction of marine ecosystems or the accidental killing of other marine animals not intended for food. Unfortunately, species such as the Bluefin Tuna, popular for sushi, are predicted to be overfished to extinction by this very year.
Check out Seafood Watch for information on which fish in your area are good to purchase and which you should be avoiding. You can also ask your grocer about the ratings and choose to support stores that sell ocean-friendly seafood. Whole Foods, for example, just announced that it will no longer sell red rated seafood! By educating yourself and shifting your grocery shopping habits, you can create a huge environmental impact that can save an entire ecosystem.

we must protect all creatures.. its our responsibility.
So be vegan !
i m agree but everyone have different mind...that is our problem.....they need the happiness life also,,,,,we must protect them...
only after the last fish has been caught men will see that Money cannot be eaten.....
Thank you for sharing that Cree wisdom. I am vegan, but I will sign the pledge anyway.
I agree but we as consumers also have to become involved and stop buying the endangered fish. We are as guilty as the men who over fish the oceans. We are also killing the food supply with pollutants that cause algae growth which depletes oxygen in the water leaving miles of dead spots in lakes and streams. Rather than stopping it everyone simply shifts the blame so they won't have to pay for the clean up.
The only fish I buy are for my cats, and I try to purchase species that I understand not to be under threat, eg pilchards, sardines, mackerel...
good onya!
Oh no, not pilchards :(
I subscribe

We need to be good shepherds of the earth and all its creatures.
