Action Against Hunger urgently asks your support to meet an increasingly desperate humanitarian threat in violence-torn southern Sudan. The region’s troubled history is well-known. Millions have been killed or uprooted in a series of brutal conflicts between the north and south. Following southern Sudan’s peaceful vote for independence this past January, there was widespread hope that the fighting would stop. It hasn’t. The army of northern Sudan has launched new attacks in the disputed border area of Abyei, where an estimated 110,000 people have been forced to flee south. Now conflicts are erupting in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile as the north positions itself for what could be another long war over control of the south’s natural resources. Even before this latest outbreak of hostilities, southern Sudan had been struggling to cope with over 200,000 people who had returned to their homes after the independence vote. Please help us expand our proven nutrition, water and sanitation programs to prevent potential catastrophes set to befall the innocent in Sudan and other insecure places around the world.
